       A: The MESDC is the first Windows Embedded regional development center in Asia. Located within the Microsoft Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Beijing, China, the MESDC is a significant part of the US$75 million global investment in R&D that the Windows Embedded Business is making this fiscal year. The MESDC will support global product development and drive smart, connected, service-oriented device development.

       The Microsoft Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is one of the core Microsoft China Research and Development Groups. Founded November 2003, ATC started with the vision to build a world-class Microsoft engineering organization in China and a leading product and business incubation site by delivering business impact through the China market and technology focused innovation. It’s characterized by a strong focus on developing core technologies and product features for the world market and on accelerating the incubation of the technologies and innovation from Microsoft Research into products and services for China and emerging market.

       After over four years of rapid growth, ATC has become a world class product R&D center, a cornerstone of Microsoft’s R&D efforts in China, and one of the company’s most productive hubs for new product developments. Today, the 400 strong R&D team is focusing on five strategic areas: Web Services, Mobile, Digital Entertainment , Windows Serviceability and Emerging Markets.

A: The ATC has been very successful in producing key technologies and leading R&D efforts for Microsoft. We decided to base our R&D facility in the Beijing ATC as it provides a very conducive environment for us to achieve goals.

       Q: What does Windows Embedded plan to achieve?

       A: The MESDC will support global product R&D, drive development of new and innovative features of Microsoft's embedded operating systems, and accelerate collaboration between the Microsoft product groups represented in the ATC. In addition, the MESDC will support the needs of the active Windows Embedded partner ecosystem in China by engaging with OEMs in embedded systems lighthouse projects that accelerate the development of connected consumer devices.

      A: The MESDC is a significant part of the US$75 million global investment in R&D that the Windows Embedded Business is making this fiscal year.

      Q: How will this team in ATC collaborate with existing Windows Embedded product development teams and/or other product groups in the ATC?

      A: The embedded systems engineers at the MESDC will work closely with the Windows Embedded product development team in Redmond. It's too early to say which are the product groups in the ATC that we will be collaborating with, but we will pursue opportunities that are in line with Microsoft's overall strategy.

       A: The MESDC will be leaded by Robert Parker, General Manager of Microsoft Advanced Technology Center. By the end of 2008, the MESDC will have up to 15 engineers working closely with the Windows Embedded product development team in Redmond, and expect to build out a stronger team in the next calendar year.

        A: Microsoft is announcing the launch of the MESDC, its first Windows Embedded regional development center in Asia.         At IIC-China, Microsoft will deliver its vision which revolves around the “Connected Experience” and its commitment to enable developers and device makers to build smart, connected, service-oriented devices. Microsoft will also showcase some of the latest connected consumer devices its global and Asian partners have developed.
